Learn By Doing Mini Grants

The POLS department now has a Learn By Doing Grant fund, open to all POLS majors and MPP students!

Information about the purpose of the grant and the application process is supplied below. To submit applications, email the requested information to Dr. Jennifer Denbow and Dr. Michael Latner by midnight on April 22.

The purpose of the grant is provide more opportunities for POLS students to apply Cal Poly's Learn By Doing philosophy to their own academic and professional activities. The fund has a $500 limit per student, with $1500 in funds to be allocated in fall and $3500 in funds to be allocated in winter. The types of eligible projects are as follows:

  • Travel for data collection, conferences, or Learn By Doing experiences
  • Registration for conferences or workshops
  • Supplies for research or community-based projects
  • Professionalization experiences or activities that will help build your resume

To apply, the following information is required:

  • Timeline (funds must be used before June 30)
  • Brief project overview
  • Justification for funds, including the the intellectual or professional merit of the project and why funds are necessary
  • Budget
  • If traveling, will students be driving?

The decision criteria will be based on whether the applicant's proposal aligns with fundable projects, includes all requested information, and provides justification of both intellectual/professional merit AND the need for funds.
